If you are on a first date with a girl and you hold the door open for her in a grand, chivalrous manner, she will resent you for thinking she is incapable of opening the door herself. But if you do not open the door for her, she will wonder, who is this prick who can’t hold a door open for me? 

The correct action is to hold the door open for her, but do so in a manner that is casual and blasé, like the only reason you did it was because you just happened to be walking slightly in front of her.
